GitHub made Copilot Fusion, its system that picks and combines models for each task, generally available at Universe on October 28. On Artificial Analysis' Coding Agent Index, read at 17:00 UTC the same day, GitHub Copilot with Copilot Fusion (Max) scores 59.9, third of 31 agent setups. Claude Code with Claude Opus 5.5 leads at 61.7, then Devin Fusion CLI with Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna at 61.5.
THE COST
Artificial Analysis lists an average cost per task of $5.59 for Copilot Fusion (Max) against $11.42 for Claude Code with Opus 5.5. GitHub's own post adds that Fusion used about half as many tokens and took about 40% less time per task; those two figures are GitHub's.
MAI CODE 1.1 FLASH
Microsoft AI's coding model, which Microsoft's Command Line blog described on October 7 as a mixture-of-experts with 137 billion total and 6.8 billion active parameters, built to run on the device. From today, Copilot can download it on supported Windows devices through the Windows ML provider, and Copilot Fusion can route work between it and cloud models. It is an opt-in experimental preview; on macOS and Linux it runs only through a local OpenAI-compatible server the developer sets up. Microsoft reports peak memory of 75.5GB at a 256k context on a Surface Laptop Ultra.
ALSO FROM UNIVERSE
Copilot can now generate and edit images through a tool powered by OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Flare, in public preview on paid Copilot plans. GitHub Enterprise now includes Copilot for every licensed user at enterprises that work with a GitHub or Microsoft account team, with usage metered against the enterprise budget; users without an Enterprise license get Copilot Standalone at $10 per user per month.
WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW
Which models Copilot Fusion uses on a given task; Artificial Analysis lists Anthropic and OpenAI as the makers behind its run. Whether MAI Code 1.1 Flash will reach an API or open weights: Microsoft has not published it on Hugging Face.
