Musk says Grok 4.6 ships next week — on the earnings call where SpaceX stock fell 8%

SpaceX held its first public earnings call yesterday. Grok was on the agenda, and the version of it circulating as a bullet list flattens three very different levels of certainty into one. Here they are separated.

Confirmed, from coverage of the call itself. Musk said Grok 5 will be unveiled before the end of the year, trained on "all the data that SpaceX has ever produced", and that it would be "by far the best engineer" — he used the phrase "AGI-level". On compute he claimed "over two gigawatts of compute" by year-end, several times that cumulatively by the end of next year, and that SpaceX data centres will run exclusively on Nvidia. His line on the relative difficulty: "The terrestrial data centers are a trivial problem compared to making gigantic reusable rockets which are launched frequently."

Also confirmed, and mostly missing from the AI coverage: the market did not buy it. SpaceX stock fell more than 8% in late trading after the call.

Reported, from one outlet's account of the same call. Grok 4.6 releases next week, with 4.7 following in roughly three to four weeks. We could not find this in every write-up of the call — Gizmodo's coverage of the same event does not mention 4.6 or 4.7 at all — so it rests on a narrower base than the Grok 5 remarks do.

Not from this call at all. The 1.5T and 2.1T parameter figures attached to 4.6 and 4.7 in circulating summaries trace back to Musk's own late-July statement, not to yesterday. Neither account of this call gives a parameter count for either model. If you see "Grok 4.6, 1.5T, confirmed on the earnings call", two of those three things are true and they are not the same two.

Why we are being this careful. On August 4 we looked at an aggregator reporting that "Grok 4.6 launched August 7, 2026" — a date three days in the future, written as though it had already happened — and refused to run it. This is the real version of that story: not a launch, a launch timing, said out loud by the person who decides it, on a dated call, with a market reaction attached. The difference between those two items is the entire product.

What it means for the board. Our watch entry for the next Grok tier has carried a late-July note pointing at 4.6 around August 7 at 1.5T, then 4.7 at 2.1T. Musk's "next week" is consistent with that and slightly later. The entry is armed for 4.6 through 4.9 and for the 2T codename, so whichever id appears first fires — and worth noting for anyone reading a leaderboard: Grok 4.20 is a real, shipped family from March, not a future release, which is a trap we walked into and out of yesterday.
