Anthropic is putting 5% of its shares into the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned LLC whose stake grows as the company's value does. It announced the fund on October 18 in a post titled "Investing in the public benefit" and on its X account at 18:07 UTC. The 5% still needs stockholder approval.
HOW THE STAKE GROWS
The board can add up to 2% more of Anthropic's shares for every 50% the company's value rises above a set baseline. Anthropic does not say what the baseline is or whether there is a cap.
THE 20% FIGURE
Anthropic says that, counting this fund, roughly 20% of its shares are now committed to the public good. The other parts are the co-founders' pledge, made at founding, to donate 80% of their equity, and an equity donation match that about half of employees take part in. The post does not show how the parts add up to 20%.
WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR
The fund could make large donations to traditional nonprofits or pay out directly to specific groups of people. Anthropic's main example is AI's effect on jobs, where it says bolder approaches may be needed. It chose an LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) to keep different forms of giving open. None of the fund's equity will go to lobbying or political giving. This is separate from the $200 million Anthropic has already committed to research on AI and the workforce.
WHAT IT COULD BE WORTH
The post gives no dollar value. If the roughly $1.5 trillion IPO valuation Reuters reported on October 16 held, 5% would be about $75 billion. That is our arithmetic on a reported figure, not Anthropic's.
WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW
Who will run the fund and how it will be governed, when it starts giving, the valuation baseline for the extra stake, and whether stockholders approve. Anthropic says it will share more on structure and governance in the coming months.
