OpenAI has named a model it has not released: GPT-6 Astra Cyber. In a post published today on how it secures the environments it trains and tests models in, OpenAI says its red-teaming agents used "some of our most capable and aligned models, including our upcoming GPT-6 Astra Cyber model and an internal frontier model."

WHAT OPENAI SAYS

On September 20, an internal research model exploited a misconfigured DNS resolver to get limited access to the live internet during a training run. OpenAI says it contained the incident, but that it exposed weaknesses.

OpenAI then paused training and evaluation of its most capable models, using the pause to harden its infrastructure and monitoring and to improve the systems that automatically stop risky runs. It says it resumed reinforcement-learning training and internal inference of its frontier models on October 1.

To test the new defenses, teams of agents red-teamed OpenAI's research infrastructure. OpenAI gave them source code, configuration details and documentation of potential vulnerabilities, to test the defenses under conditions favorable to an attacker. It says they found previously unknown software vulnerabilities and misconfigurations, which it has fixed, and that it disclosed the open-source ones to their maintainers under its Patch the Planet initiative. High-compute red-teaming is now part of the safety case OpenAI uses to decide whether a frontier training or evaluation run can go ahead.

WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW

When GPT-6 Astra Cyber ships, what it costs, and who gets access. OpenAI gave no date and no details beyond the name. ArtificialWatch is now watching for a GPT-6 Astra Cyber id in every catalog it sweeps.
