Hassabis steps back from running DeepMind — and Gemini model development changes hands

Demis Hassabis is stepping out of the day-to-day running of Google DeepMind. He announced it himself, and Google published a joint message from Sundar Pichai and Hassabis to go with it, so this is first-party throughout.

The moves, as stated:

Hassabis becomes Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. He leaves operational responsibility, keeps leading Isomorphic Labs, and will "advise across models and research" while concentrating on long-term AGI strategy. In his own words: "I've been working towards AGI my whole life, and as we enter this pivotal moment, I'm stepping into a new role."

Koray Kavukcuoglu becomes SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting to Pichai, and retains Chief AI Architect. What he now owns is the part that matters here, quoted exactly: "Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams."

And the item almost nobody is leading with: Jeff Dean is leaving Google after 27 years. He is starting an independent public benefit corporation with Sanjay Ghemawat, focused on "ML, science, and engineering". Dean has been at the centre of Google's infrastructure and model work for the entire modern history of the company. That is not a footnote to a reshuffle, and it was not in the leak card that pointed us at this story — we found it by reading Google's post instead of the summary of it.

Why this is on a model-tracking wire rather than a business one. As of today, the executive who owns Gemini model development is a different person than yesterday. Gemini 3.5 Pro has now missed five predicted launch dates — June, July 17, July 24, an August 12–14 leak, and a claim circulating right now that it ships tomorrow. A leadership handover on the model org, on the same day the leaks say the flagship is imminent, is worth knowing if you are the person waiting on that model. We are not going to pretend to know which direction it cuts.

On Gemini 4, be careful with what is actually claimed. The circulating summary says Google "confirmed Gemini 4 is making great progress". The blog post is thinner than that: it refers to new models in progress and Hassabis mentions Gemini 4 developments underway. The concrete progress claims in the post are about shipped things — "Flash is in high demand", the Cyber model "live", and Gemma "surpassed 900M+ downloads". Our board carries Gemini 4 as rumored and that does not change on this.

What we would watch next. Kavukcuoglu now reports directly to Pichai, which shortens the line between the model roadmap and the CEO. If 3.5 Pro slips a sixth time, it slips under new management with a shorter chain — and the first release decision made after a handover usually tells you more about the new owner's risk appetite than any org chart does.
