OpenAI now caps how many paid ChatGPT accounts one device can use
An email when a new frontier model answers on a public API, about 15 minutes after members · free, no card

OpenAI now limits how many paid ChatGPT accounts can be used on one device. Its help center says a paid account over the limit shows a "Device limit reached" warning and can't be used on that device, even if the purchase went through and the account worked at first. We read the page directly on November 1; it was marked as updated the day before.
WHAT OPENAI'S PAGE SAYS
- The device limit covers ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. Free accounts and Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces do not count toward it. - Separately, ChatGPT may block a new subscription purchase when too many subscriptions are tied to the same payment card or device. OpenAI says that block is not a bank decline. - Signing out of one account does not guarantee another paid account becomes eligible. The device limit is also separate from account switching, which keeps up to 2 accounts signed in at a time. - Buying credits or resetting usage does not clear a card or device restriction. For more usage, OpenAI points to credits or usage resets on an account you already use, under Settings > Usage in ChatGPT or Usage & Billing in the Codex app. - Subscriptions bought before the restrictions take effect can continue under an existing-subscription exception, but canceling one does not guarantee you can replace it. - If the warning appears at sign-in, you can sign in to another permitted account, or cancel and request a refund.
WHAT IS SOURCED
Everything above comes from the article "Understanding card and device limits in ChatGPT" on help.openai.com, read on November 1. The two-account switching figure is from OpenAI's article "Using multiple ChatGPT accounts on web and mobile". @Mr_Salio flagged the device limit on November 1.
WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW
How many paid accounts one device allows, how ChatGPT identifies a device, and the date the restrictions took effect. OpenAI does not give a number. The change lands a day after OpenAI said ChatGPT and Codex usage will share one token-based allowance from December.
